Food Banks

A food bank is a non-profit, charitable organization that distributes food to those who have difficulty purchasing enough to avoid hunger.

Start by looking online to see if there are any independent local food banks that you can go to without a referral. If there aren’t any, you’ll need to be sent by someone else. For example by a charity, family hubs or someone like a GP or social worker.

Hate Crime

The term ‘hate crime’ can be used to describe a range of criminal behaviour where the perpetrator is motivated by hostility or demonstrates hostility towards the victim’s race, religion/faith, sexual orientation, disability or transgender identity.

A hate crime can include verbal abuse, intimidation, threats, harassment, assault and bullying, as well as damage to property.

All hate crimes should be reported either to the police or to a reporting centre.

You can report hate crimes either in person at the police station or online

A modern day slave is anyone, of any age, who has been forced to come to the UK to work or marry under the threat of violence and for someone else’s gain.

Honour based violence

Honour based violence is a collection of practices, which are used to control behaviour within families or other social groups to protect perceived cultural and religious beliefs and/or honour. Such violence can occur when perpetrators perceive that a relative has shamed the family and / or community by breaking their honour code.

Forced marriage is a marriage in which one or more of the parties is married without his or her consent or against his or her will. A forced marriage differs from an arranged marriage, in which both parties consent to the assistance of their parents or a third party (such as a matchmaker) in choosing a spouse

FGM:  Female Genital Mutilation, also known as female genital cutting and female circumcision, is the ritual cutting or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia. The practice is found in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and within communities from countries in which FGM is common. UNICEF estimated in 2016 that 200 million women living today in 30 countries—27 African countries, Indonesia, Iraqi Kurdistan and Yemen—have undergone the procedures.
