All 3 and 4-year-olds in England are entitled to 570 hours of free early education or childcare a year. This is often taken as 15 hours each week for 38 weeks of the year. Some 2-year-olds are also eligible. You should contact your local authority’s Children’s Information Service to find out where offers free early education places.
Primary schools in the city serve children between the ages of 4 and 11 years. In most areas one school will provide for all primary age pupils; in one area there is a separate school for Infants (aged 4-7) and Juniors (aged 8-11). Some schools also have Nursery Classes, which admit children in the academic year before they are due to start school.
In England, Wales and Northern Ireland pupils start secondary school in the September following their 11th birthday.
Pupils can leave secondary school after their 16th birthday. In England, young people must remain in some form of further education or training until they are 18.
Once students finish secondary school at 16 they are able to choose where and what they study. If they want to go on to university, students will usually choose to study A-Levels at a local sixth-form or further education college. Another option is to work as an apprentice. This means young people learn a job-specific skill through a combination of work and study.
British universities offer lots of different courses. However, whether you can study in the UK or not depends on your immigration status. Your status also affects the costs of your course.
English courses will help you to adapt to British communities. Improving your English will help you to communicate in your daily life with doctors, teachers, neighbours and understand the laws and the British values.
